Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to remain there for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
