The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
